It is our goal to develop enough micro-businesses to make this community self-sustainable, independent of our donations, and outside help.

Taxi Business

Public transportation in Uganda is the primary means of travel. A taxi driver is known to have the most reliable occupation without a college degree (which is unattainable for the majority of Africans). When we started the taxi business in June 2006, it was our first experimental micro-business to raise funds within Uganda, and has now become our first successful step toward self-sustainability for CLD.

Through generous donations to Come Let’s Dance, a 14-passenger taxi was purchased in Kampala with a contract drawn up tracking the profits to three places. First, the money goes toward the food budget at the Kids’ Home, then to supporting the drivers own families, and lastly paying back CLD in a ‘lease to own’ agreement. Once the taxi is owned by the driver, that money will go into buying another taxi for someone else; giving another person in our community a reliable job and financing another area of CLD’s budget.

Since its purchase in 2006, this Ugandan managed business has provided a steady income for the food budget at the Kids’ Home. As of April 2008, we saw the true exponential effect of this cycle happen with the purchase of a second taxi. Our driver, Ema, is well on his way to purchasing our current taxi, really proving the success of this program. Ben, currently studying at Makerere University, is a prominent leader in the community, and manages all the finances for this Micro-Business, working with the drivers and keeping them accountable.
